DREAMING IN MY GRANDMOTHER'S COUNTRY
Rooted in matriarchal lineage and ancient tradition, Dreaming in My Grandmother’s Country is both a tribute and a continuation — an intergenerational map of memory, spirit, and survival. This body of work honours the sacred Country of Atnwengerrp in the Northern Territory, passed down through four generations of women artists from the Utopia region, including my late great-grandmother Minnie Pwerle and my grandmother Barbara Weir.

Executed through fine, rhythmic dot work and flowing linear formations, the painting offers an aerial perspective of our Country — as though one is soaring above, tracing the spiritual pathways of Ancestors who once walked these lands. This bird’s-eye view reveals ceremonial sites, bush foods, and songlines embedded within the landscape, speaking to a knowledge system that has existed for tens of thousands of years.
Taught to me by my Grandmother the late Barbara Weir through storytelling and deep cultural guidance, these forms are more than artistic expression — they are living stories, held within the land and passed down through kinship and cultural responsibility. Painting this Dreaming is both a sacred act and a visual statement of continuity: it connects me with the women before me and the Country that continues to guide and sustain us.
Since 2021, I have carried this vision with reverence, evolving its expression through my own lens as a contemporary Aboriginal woman and artist. This work is not only a bridge between past and present, but a personal declaration of my responsibility to protect, share, and honour the enduring strength of my culture.
